Guitar Smashed By Kurt Cobain For Sale

A guitar used and abused by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, will be going up for auction this month, as part of a large rock and roll memorabilia sell-off.
Cobain used the black, left handed, Mexican Fender Stratocaster during Nirvana’s In Utero tour in 1993. On December 30, during a Nirvana performance at the L.A. Forum, Cobain smashed the guitar, approached the side of the stage, grabbed a drill from his guitar technician and then proceeded to drill a hole into the bridge pickup on stage. Eddie Van Halen was present at the gig, and it is rumored that Cobain was trying to impress him. The guitar was fixed after the show and was used by Cobain again in another concert.
The Stratocaster’s opening bid is $50 000 and is expected to go for $70 000. Along with the broken axe, the winning bidder will also receive pictures of Cobain playing and destroying the guitar, a DVD of the entire show, a pick that was used by Cobain, as well as the actual drill Cobain used at the show. While the guitar is not in playable condition, it could be easily restored.
Gotta Have It! Collectibles have organized the auction, which will also include the guitar strap used by Jimi Hendrix when he first set his axe ablaze at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The seller of the Hendrix guitar strap was in attendance at the festival, when he allegedly caught a piece of the burning guitar body, with the strap attached, after Hendrix threw pieces of the shattered guitar into the crowd.
The online auction started Wednesday, July 13 and will close on Friday, July 22.

  1. The oddest thing about this guitar, which is now on display at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Cleveland OH, Play it Now Exhibit Is that it was restored using a neck not quite right for the time period and guitar.
They used a 1996-1997 production year left handed Fender Stratocaster Standard neck, which is mostly correct in appearance, except for the year it was produced, which was at least 2 years after Cobain’s death.

Just think it would have been more authentic had they used a correct 1993-1994 production year left handed Fender Stratocaster Standard neck, which is what the original guitar would have had.
