According to guitar manufacturer Gibson, The best electric guitar riff of all time is “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones.
Gibson put the track in top spot in a list of 50 songs which contain the best riffs.
Russell Hall, a contributor to the company’s website, explained the decision had been made because “no other riff has ever captured the essence of rock and roll as succinctly, elegantly and infectiously”.
He explained that it had first been heard by Keith Richards in a dream, with the guitarist waking up and immediately recording it on a portable cassette player.
The definitive version of the song went on to be recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood, making musical history in the process.
Other tracks to feature in the top ten of the list included Black Sabbath’s Iron Man and Whole Lotta Love from Led Zeppelin, while Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple took second place.
The rundown, which has been taking place over the course of the week, has also featured songs recorded by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Metallica.
