Daron Malakian Recording New Scars On Broadway Record On His Own

System Of A Down guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian has announced that he will be releasing his side-project, Scars On Broadway’s sophomore album early next year.

In an interview with Revolver magazine, Malakian revealed that he would record the album’s guitars, vocals, bass and drums entirely on his own, despite Scars On Broadway having a full lineup: “It was just this secret, personal thing I wanted to do for myself,” he said. “I didn’t want there to be any hype behind it.”

He explained that although he could release the album as a solo project, doing so would be impractical: “I could have just recorded music and put it out under my own name, but I actually want to tour these songs and get behind them. And I was ready to do another Scars On Broadway record. I’ve just been going with the flow, and the flow’s taken me here.”

The songs set to feature on the album, Malakian divulged, were inspired by a wide range of emotions: “The songs are never just about one thing. They’re usually about five different things,” he began. “Take, ‘Fuck N Kill’: It’s about a few emotions that blend together and make a person maybe want to do both-maybe at the same time, or one after the other, who knows? Like, you watch television and you see on the news that there’s a war going on, but the girl that’s explaining it to you is fucking gorgeous. How does your brain take that?”

Malakian said that while most of the material he is currently writing is for Scars On Broadway, he is prepared, should System Of A Down decide to return to the studio: “…right now System is just playing live. To get that band back together in the studio means getting four different guys back together, and I don’t know when that will happen. But, let’s just say I do have some ‘rainy day’ songs just in case.”
