“Jimi Hendrix – Band Of Gypsys” DVD Released

As far as Guitarist’s go, Jimi Hendrix is undoubtedly one of the greatest. A recently released DVD titled “Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys” documents concerts filmed of Hendrix and his lesser-known but highly talented backing group “Band of Gypsys”. Those of you who are interested in seeing Hendrix get his funk on; this is the documentary for you.
After disbanding with legendary backing band “the Experience,” Hendrix joined forces with drummer Buddy Miles, and former army friend and bass player, Billy Cox and put together “Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys”. The trio took on a more funky approach to music writing, releasing several well-received songs including; “Who Knows,” “Message to Love,” “Stepping Stone,” and “Power of Soul”.
Filmed in black and white on New Year’s Eve ‘69/’70 at Fillmore East in New York City, “Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys” features songs “Who Knows,” “Machine Gun,” “Them Changes”, “Power of Soul,” “Stepping Stone,” “Foxy Lady,” “Stop” and “Earth Blues”. Other highlights include; behind the scenes interviews with band members and personnel that give insight into Hendrix’s writing process, modern day interviews with guitarists influenced by Hendrix including Slash and Lenny Kravitz, along with loads more.
The Band of Gypsys time together was short lived, several reasons have been given why including disagreements over drummer Buddy Miles wanting the group to have two front men. There was also an incident at Madison Square Garden, where, after insulting a woman in the audience, Hendrix played just two songs before exiting the stadium.
The Fillmore East concert is amongst the only recordings ever released by “Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys”. There has been two DVD’s and a live CD derived from the performance, however the full set has never been released.
