Michael Jackson has to be the most iconic pop artist ever, dubbed the King of Pop, he was one of the most impactful and iconic artists to ever live. The singer-songwriter was from Indiana and was originally part of the band The Jackson Five, which he formed with his siblings. Michael Jackson also holds the record for the most Grammy wins in one night at the 1984 awards, with an incredible 8! This is a record he still holds, but it became jointly held with Santana in 2000.
Hard Rock
The most iconic rock band from America is usually collectively accepted to be Aerosmith, fronted by Steven Tyler. Aeromith is a Boston band formed in 1970, their most iconic song being ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing’, which was released in 1998. They have also been massive influences on subsequently successful bands. Aerosmith proved to be a major influences to Van Halen, and Joe Perry has claimed that Eddie Van Halen once told him that his band Van Halen “started out on the suburban L.A. club circuit, playing Aerosmith songs”. Heartland Rock
The now 76 year old Bruce Springsteen, or ‘The Boss’ as he is lovingly called by fans, is one of the true pioneers of Heartland Rock, which combines blue-collar themes and storytelling with folk and rock genres. The Boss has released 21 studio albums across 6 decades in the business. Bruce Springsteen is not just one of the most iconic singer-songwriters alive, but also one of the best performers. One of the most well-known bands to come out of the global punk scene is The Ramones. It would be hard to find someone who can hear ‘Hey ho’ and not immediately follow it with ‘let’s go!’. The band members were also individually very influential; Johnny Ramone was named one of Time magazine’s “10 Greatest Electric-Guitar Players” in 2003.
That same year, he was also number 16 on the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list in Rolling Stone. America is and has been home to some of the world’s best soul artists, but the most iconic to a lot of people is Aretha Franklin. She moved across genres to R&B, Pop and Gospel and managed to combine them in such a way that it has solidified her as one of America’s all time most iconic musicians. She began singing in her local church in the gospel genre and went on to be named ‘the greatest singer of all time’ by Rolling Stone Magazine, an incredible honour coming from one of the world’s biggest music magazines. She is also known as the Queen of Soul, a loving nickname that highlights her impact on the global scene.
Rap
Tupac Shakur or 2Pac, his stage name, is commonly cited as the most iconic and influential American rapper due to his poetic, political, and personal songwriting. He also has a deep and impactful global impact which has continued on despite his early, untimely death, and it has been such a long time since it happened in 1996. In some ways, 2Pac’s death solidified him in icon status, as his memory has never been forgotten, and the circumstances around his death have been memorialised in other artists’ raps since it happened.
